Student’s Take on Campus Safety

26.7% of students are not satisfied with the level of safety found in Prince George’s Community College; that’s more than 1/4 of students. This is due to the lack of campus safety initiatives as well as the accessibility to the resources that students need in order to feel secure about their safety.

Trends

Safety reports indicate that from 2022-2024, per the 2025 PGCC Annual Security Report, the following crimes took place:

  • 10 Burglary Incidents
  • 4 Robbery Incidents
  • 2 Motor Vehicle Thefts
  • 1 Arrest for Weapon Violation
  • 3 Disciplinary Referrals for Drug Abuse
  • 1 Case of Aggravated Assault
  • 1 Case of Domestic Violence

When analyzing these charts, a certain trend that appeared from it was that most of these crimes took place at the Largo campus of PGCC. This trend suggest that Largo campus seems to be the most prone to crimes than any other PGCC Campus; which leads to more concerns raised from students as most of the PGCC Student Body attends PGCC at the Largo campus.

Common Safety Concerns

Students at PGCC brought up many concerns regarding campus safety through the interviews that took place. Here are the most notable testimonials that the Campus Guardians collected from these interviews:

  • I don’t feel there is sufficient in protecting the safety of students and faculty because the building are large, and the security needs to match the largeness of the buildings.”
  • “However the lack of security could be the opening for something horrific to happen in the future. “
  • “…campus police officers are accessible but they’re not as amiable to students. They tend to keep to themselves most of the time.”
  • “Maybe because the campus is open to the public… Since it’s open anyone could get in including outside threats. “
  • “Yes I am aware of the safety resources available on campus and I think they’re a bit lacking in protecting student’s/faculty safety. I say this because anyone can just walk onto campus and go inside one of the buildings without needing to prove they’re a PGCC student.”

Campus Safety Accessibility

1/3 of PGCC students believe that campus police are difficult to reach due to the lack of visibility they have around campus. This is indicative that the college should promote more engagement between the campus police and students so that students can rely more on their officers for their safety.
